When choosing a grammar program, I'd first suggest that you wait for a formal grammar program until you are finished with phonics, or until second grade, whichever comes first.
- It's okay for introductory grammar like using Level 1 and Level 2 of Tapestry of Grace's writing component, but it is truly unnecessary to do anything more.
- Once you begin grammar, spend no more than 5-10 minutes a day doing it in the Lower Grammar level. After that, assign a page a day unless it becomes busy work. At that point, jump to the next section in the book to revitalize learning. Every once in a while, jump back to the skipped pages to make sure that skills are still adequate.
- Use the level appropriate book of Easy Grammar (in written form unless in 2nd grade) and then also do the coresponding Daily Grams ORALLY. It will take you minutes a day and takes very little preparation.
- When you finish "Easy Grammar Plus" (which will likely be in 7th or 8th grade), go straight into a Latin program to cement all of the years of grammar learning.
We will soon be carrying Latin, but meanwhile, please keep the following under consideration:
- Latin before the Dialectic level is really more for the mom/teacher than the student because it is at the Dialectic level that connections with the English language are made.
- If you want to start learning Latin in preparation for teaching your student at the Dialectic level, I recommend Memoria Press's Latina Christiana. A teacher can go through this program in 5-10 minutes a day over the course of a few months and be adequately prepared to teach Latin when the time is right.
- When you are ready to teach Latin, I currently recommend Latin in the Christian Trivium. Purchasing the activity book is unnecessary; we considered it busy work. http://www.latintrivium.com/
