At the dawn of the next world war, a plane crashes on an uncharted island, stranding a group of schoolboys. At first, with no adult supervision, their freedom is something to celebrate. This far from civilization they can do anything they want. Anything. But as order collapses, as strange howls echo in the night, as terror begins its reign, the hope of adventure seems as far removed from reality as the hope of being rescued.

This book is quite an interesting study on what people would be like without some type of restraint or government. The description from the publisher’s website reads as follows:  “Free from the rules of society, young British boys struggle with opposing instincts–to create a thriving civilization or give in to the savagery within. All the while they are forced to confront the evil within themselves.”

  • Lucerna Academy families: Read for 3 weeks in Year 4 Dialectic Literature class.
  • Tapestry of Grace families: Tapestry assigns this book for 3 weeks, although it could possibly be read in 1 or 1 1/2 weeks. Even though the book does not have extremely elevated language, it does have more mature themes, so we highly encourage you to devote the whole three weeks to its study and follow the Teacher’s Notes to bring a solid biblical worldview into a clear understanding.
