In 1656, 12-year-old William Penn lived with his family in Ireland. He was a religious boy who spent hours every day reading the Bible. William’s father heard stories of a religious group known as the Quakers. Being a Quaker was against the law. The Penns were afraid of getting arrested and remained members of the Church of England. As an adult, William’s dreams of worshiping freely in England faded, so William moved to America.
